TWO groups stood in front of the Cebu City Hall on Monday morning, March 1, 2021, to protest against the joint venture agreement between Cebu City Government and Megawide Construction Corp. to redevelop the Carbon Public Market.

The groups are:

• Movement Against Carbon Market Privatization, an alliance of stall owners, ambulant vendors, residents, and consumers of Carbon Public Market

• Carbonhanong Alyansa alang sa Reporma ug Bahandianong Ogma sa mga Nanginabuhi, a vendors' organization

They believe the joint agreement will lead to the privatization of the market, which will negatively affect their livelihood.

While the protest is ongoing, the groups submitted a petition paper to the Cebu City Hall.

Megawide assures no displacement of vendors

Going to Carbon will be more than just going to the market

Early January 2021, Megawide Construction Corp. signed a joint venture agreement with the Cebu City Government for the P5.5-billion redevelopment package of the Carbon Public Market.

Last month, the infrastructure developer has assured the public that no vendor in the market will be displaced once the construction for the redevelopment will start. A temporary facility will be refurbished to serve as a temporary facility where vendors can sell.

The company has also assured there will be no increase in market fees. (ALC/With NRC)
