SCBI to comply with city environmental protocols

THE San Carlos Bioenergy Incorporated (SCBI) said it will comply with the environmental protocols set by the City Government of San Carlos City for their bioethanol plant.

San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo said he has received a letter from SCBI, wherein they have agreed to address their wastewater pollution problem, which has caused water discoloration off the coastline of Barangay Punao.

Among the issues they have agreed to address is to drain their waste water ponds in order to prevent it from overflowing.

Once addressed, Gustilo will allow the bioethanol plant to resume normal operations on March 8.

The SCBI started operation in 2008. It was the first regenerative combined cycle power plant in Asia using sugar cane that produces 42 million liters of bioethanol per annum and 8 megawatts of electricity from sugar cane.

The plant was shuttered last month, after an inspection revealed that their holding ponds are full of liquid wastes which had spilled along the coastal area of the city.

Gustilo also cited as evidence the footages and reports from the City Planning and Development Coordinator's Office, Bantay Katunggan of the Coastal Resource Management of the City Environment Management Office (CRM-CEMO), Eco-Zone Multi-Partite Monitoring Team (MMT), and City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
