Sultan to fight in May

ONE-time world title challenger Jonas Sultan makes his ring return in May in his native Zamboanga after finishing his sparring duties with International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas in the United States.

“I still don’t know my opponent. I’ll just keep myself ready,” Sultan told SunStar Cebu.

Sultan said his promoters ZC Kings Promotions is working on promoting his upcoming fight after being sidelined for more than a year now. He last saw action on Aug. 17, 2019 in Ormoc City, when he stopped Salatiel Amit in seven rounds.

Sultan left for the US on Oct. 11, 2020 and has been the main sparring partner of Ancajas for his upcoming fight with Mexican Jonathan Rodriguez in April.

“We have started training at the Wild Card last week,” said Sultan. “Our training is going well. I sparred with Jerwin there at the Wild Card, and we also sparred with two other fighters. We sparred with a Mexican, but we don’t know his name. Our sparring went very well because our sparring partners were very tough.”

Sultan will first finish helping out Ancajas in sparring and support him in his upcoming title defense before going home to Zamboanga.

“I will go home after Jerwin’s fight,” he said.

Sultan and Ancajas were once rivals before they became close friends and sparring partners.

Sultan, who was still with the now defunct ALA Gym, challenged Ancajas in 2018. Sultan was outclassed by Ancajas via a lopsided unanimous decision.

The 28-year-old Sultan, 16-5 with 10 knockouts, believes that he still has a lot left in his tank for another run at a title.

He hopes that his new promoter, ZC Kings Promotions, will be able to give him that opportunity soon.
