Less than 1,800 infections break series of above-2,000 daily cases

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, reported 1,783 new coronavirus infections, breaking the series of above-2,000 cases per day over the last six days.

These new cases brought the cumulative case count in the Philippines to 582,223, including 35,056 active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities.

The active cases accounted for 6.0 percent of the total number of cases as of March 3.

There were 20 additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 12,389. The case fatality rate remained at 2.13 percent.

An additional 330 people recovered from infection, bringing the total recoveries to 534,778 or 91.9 percent of the total case count.

The positivity rate was high at 7.9 percent as 2,154 out of 27,338 samples tested over a 24-hour period until noon of March 2 were found positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Based on the DOH national Covid-19 tracker, Cebu City continued to post the highest number of cases while Cebu Province fell as three cities in Metro Manila registered higher numbers.

Cebu City had 2,400 cases in the last 14 days to March 2, followed by Quezon City with 1,498, Pasay City (1,489), Manila (1,300) and Cebu Province (1,203.

Among the regions, the National Capital Region (NCR) still had the highest for the period at 8,983, followed by Central Visayas (5,031), Calabarzon (2,315), Central Luzon (1,560) and Cordillera (1,135). (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
