2 Nigerians arrested over ‘love scam’

AUTHORITIES arrested on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, two Nigerian nationals and their local cohort over a “love scam,” Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas said.

Arrested were Evans Amara Okeke and Chidibierre Junior Ezema, both 26 from Nigeria, as well as Judy Ann A. Japitana, 23.

Sinas said they were arrested based on the complaint of Ellen Briones, 64, a resident of Quezon City.

Briones said she met Okeke, who was using the name Michael Gerald, on social media and got into a relationship with him.

She said she sent a total of P3.23 million to Okeke, who had told her that he will be visiting the Philippines soon to construct a building for a mall in San Fernando, La Union.

“The victim found out that Okeke is a fraud and promptly reported to authorities,” said Sinas.

The three suspects were arrested in Las Piñas City during an operation conducted by a joint police team led by the Anti-Cybercrime Group.

Charges for violation of Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code (swindling/estafa) in relation to Section 5(a) and (b) and Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, also known as Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, will be filed against the suspects. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
