THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched another program in partnership with the Fit Filipino Movement to help obese cops lose weight.

PNP Chief Debold Sinas on Wednesday, March 4, 2021, said the Chubby Anonymous Project is an “intensive” weight loss program under fitness coaches, spouses Jim and Toni Saret.

During the launching, which coincided with with the global observance of World Obesity Day, Sinas encouraged the obese cops and shared some of his weight loss journey to motivate them to practice self-discipline and strictly adhere to the program.

He said he lost more than 55 pounds by following a strict diet and exercise.

"The relentless, true-to-form, and honest-to-goodness weight loss program of the PNP leadership, past and present, aims to help our personnel be watchful of their weight,” he said.

After assuming as PNP chief in November 2020, Sinas ordered the monitoring of each personnel’s body mass index (BMI), which can indicate body fatness which may lead to health problems. It was also part of the PNP’s preventive measure against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Ildebrandi Usana said police officers who fail to comply with the PNP’s required BMI, as part of the organization’s existing policy on physical fitness, may face sanctions.

For most adults, an ideal BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. A range of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight while those with 30 and above are considered obese.

BMI with obese status are divided into three types - Class 1 with 30 to 35, Class 2 with 35 to 40, and Class 3 with 40 to higher.

In 2020, around 700 policemen were classified under category 2 and 3 while at least 300 were obese.

In the National Capital Region alone, 3,000 to 4,000 are obese and overweight cops. (SunStar Philippines)
