CEBU City’s 80 barangays are set to receive a total of P600 million in financial assistance for the first time in 2021.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella said the cash aid is an annual assistance to the barangays to help fund some of their programs and projects.

Labella said the amount was decided on following a consultation with the city’s 80 village chiefs.

Labella has tasked Cebu City Councilor Raymond Alvin Garcia, City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. and the city’s local finance committee to come up with the guidelines for the releasing of the financial aid to the barangays.

In a separate interview, Casas said they are still deciding if they should divide the P600 million in half and distribute it in two tranches.

Casas said they are in the process of determining if the barangays will get an equal amount or some barangays with bigger populations will get bigger allocations.

For Garcia, one requirement for the barangays is for them to ensure that they have no unliquidated amounts from previous financial assistance given to them by the City.

“They must show us that the previous financial assistance has been liquidated. If they haven’t, we won’t release the aid,” said Garcia.

To date, Garcia said there are still barangays in the city that were not able to liquidate the previous financial assistance given by the City Hall. However, he was not able to say how many barangays.

Garcia said the barangays are urged to use the funds given to them for infrastructure projects, Covid-19 response and projects that would generate jobs.

He said the amount will be released once the mayor signs the guidelines. (JJL, PAC / JKV)
