THE Cebu City Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) is verifying reports from local police that some establishments situated in the city’s hillside barangays are offering alcohol to their customers despite the city-wide liquor ban.

BPLO head Jared Limquiaco said the BPLO personnel will conduct its own inspection in business establishments located in barangays Tabunan up to Busay.

Limquiaco said the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has not yet provided them with the list of establishments, thus they will conduct their own inspection.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella, in a press conference on March 5, 2021, warned violators that they would be penalized for failing to follow the executive order he issued.

The standing order mandated by the City Government is no public drinking of liquor and establishments are not allowed to serve liquor in their respective spaces.

Limquiaco said show cause orders will be issued to erring establishments.

He reminded the establishments that their business permits would be at stake once they violate the liquor ban policy.

Should the establishments be found liable, Limquiaco said their business permits will be suspended.

Labella said the CCPO will be relentless in running after violators of the liquor ban, especially those in the mountain barangays.

“I’d like to warn those who are fond of drinking in the spots up there. Yes, the view is nice. It’s cold there, very conducive to drinking. But since we are in a pandemic, please, I am warning you, obey the order. Obey a lawful order of a duly constituted authority like the government unit of Cebu because we will bring you to the bar of justice,” said Labella.

The liquor ban in the city was reimplemented in February after the City noted that there were establishments that served liquor that breached community quarantine protocol in the city like the curfew and social distancing policy. (JJL)
