Briones: Musings

I WILL write about the weather today because, let’s face it, it has been very hot in the last few weeks or since the weather bureau announced that a typhoon would unleash its deadly force in Cebu and — surprise, surprise — it didn’t.

Not that it was any of Pagasa’s fault. After all, a prediction is what someone thinks will happen. It’s not set in stone or something. And not that I wasn’t grateful it didn’t push through. Because I was.

After all, Cebu has had its hands full trying to resuscitate an ailing economy after the world’s longest lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease while, at the same time, doing its best not to lose its cool while cases skyrocketed in the last two months.

A natural disaster would have resulted in mayhem and destruction, something the government, already burdened with so many problems like preparing for next year’s elections, could not afford.

Plus, it’s a Sunday. I’ve had the whole week to tackle serious subjects seriously. It’s time to let my hair down. And what better way to do that than to discuss the weather.

So yes, it has been very hot. Fortunately, the humidity level has remained tolerable. And it’s not like I have a choice on both matters. Trust me, I’d rather be in the tropics than in Texas where people are still reeling from the winter storm that swept across the southern United States in February, leaving millions without power and killing at least 58 people.

I mean, you don’t read about Cebuanos stopping dead on their tracks and dying from heat and exhaustion. Or maybe they do and I just don’t know about it because cause of death was attributed to Covid-19. Trust me, I don’t want to fan rumors or contribute to hearsay, but I heard that’s what some hospitals allegedly do to take advantage of the government’s Covid-19 package.

What am I doing? I should be talking about raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Although I will stop at bright copper kettles because warm woolen mittens are just too much in this weather. Don’t you think?

At any rate, the summer breeze — oh wait, it is already summer, right? — has been making me feel fine, sometimes making me forget about the sun beating on my head while I head to the Cebu Business Park to join friends for our weekday “walk and talk” session. We used to jog at the oval at the Cebu City Sports Center, but that has been off-limits to the public for almost a year now.

Hmm. I should mention that the government has kicked off its vaccination program against Covid-19. But unless you’re on the list of priority targets or you’re a high-ranking national government official or a family member of a high-ranking national government official or someone who is close to a high-ranking national government official, then why bother?

It’s a Sunday, after all.
