Mandaue City execs wants to use public schools as vax sites

THE Mandaue City government is eyeing the use of public schools as possible vaccination sites.

The city’s Vaccine Board said they are in the process of looking for venues as they continue to wait for the national government to allocate Covid-19 vaccine stocks to the city.

Ernie Manatad, the chairman of the Mandaue City Vaccine Board and the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president, said they initially proposed to establish vaccination sites within barangay health centers.

But Manatad said he and members of the city’s Vaccine Board oppose the idea as barangay health centers in the city only have small spaces.

Manatad said the barangay health centers do not have enough space to accommodate the vaccine recipients while observing social distancing and the other vaccination protocols.

He said it is best to use the public schools as vaccination sites since it would be easier for them to set up there for each process.

Manatad said they have already informed the Mandaue City Schools Division of their intention to use the schools in the barangay.

He said once all their logistics needs are available, they will proceed to set up their vaccination sites.

In a separate interview, Mandaue City Budget Officer Giovanni Tianero said they have already identified the logistical requirements as provided by the Department of Health (DOH), the support the city will provide, and the requirements of the manpower to be hired exclusively for the vaccination rollout.

Tianero said as provided by the DOH, the City is encouraged to hire new medical technologists to focus on the rollout of the vaccination. They must not be involved in any Covid-19 responses in the city.

Manatad said as much as possible, they will not hire new employees and they will utilize the organic employees in the city who will comprise the vaccination teams for each barangay.

Tianero said should they be given an option to hire, they will offer contractual employment and the source of this budget will be from the allocated P200 million for Covid-19 response.

This allocated budget of P200 million will also fund the logistical needs of the city, the expenses for the information drive, vaccines and other Covid related expenses, Tianero said. (KFD)
