PHILIPPINES Football League (PFL) champions United City Football Club (UCFC) re-signed its two biggest stars for its upcoming campaign in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League and the 2021 PFL season.
UCFC announced on its official Facebook page that they have inked star midfielder Stepan Schröck and ace Spanish striker Bienvenido Marañon.
The 34-year-old Schröck has been with UCFC, formerly named Ceres FC, back in 2016. He has also represented the country in international competitions with the Azkals since 2011. Schröck started his career in Germany with Greuther Fürth in 2004 before playing in the Bundesliga with 1899 Hoffenheim in 2012 and
Eintracht Frankfurt in 2013. He moved back to his original club Greuther Fürth from 2014 to 2017 before finding his way to the Philippines.
Marañon, on the other hand, is an experienced striker who has played in different clubs in Spain. He has been playing in the Philippines since 2015 and is now working on his Filipino naturalization.
The 34-year-old Marañon is a prolific scorer and is the current all-time goal scorer in the AFC Cup with 35 goals.
The lethal combination of Schröck and Marañon will join the 11 other players who have been retained from the roster of UCFC’s title run in 2020. The other players who have rejoined the club are Cebuano defender Jordan Jarvis, Anthony Pinthus, Jun Badelic, Arnie Pasinabo, Hikaru Minegishi, Angelo Marasigan, Mike Ott, Sean Kane, Cholo Bugas, Miggy Clarino and Tristan Robles.
UCFC will announce soon the club’s 12 new signings.
UCFC is the first Filipino club that will be competing in the prestigious AFC Champions League, Asia’s biggest club tournament.
UCFC is in Group I along with China’s Beijing FC, Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale and the winner of the playoff match between South Korea’s Daegu FC and Thailand’s Chiangrai United. It will have its first Group I match on April 21, 2021 against Beijing FC. (EKA)
