Azkals to play remaining World Cup qualifier matches in China

THE Philippine Azkals are off to China in June to finish the remaining of the Group A matches of the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Join Qualification Round 2.

The AFC announced on March 12 that the remaining fixtures will be played in a centralized venue in China.

The Philippines has three matches left in the qualifier. The Azkals take on Guam on June 3, China on June 7 and Maldives on June 15.

The remaining matches were supposed to be played in March and June of 2020 but the games were postponed after the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Philippines is still in the running for a spot in the next round. The Philippines is currently ranked third place with seven points from two wins, two losses and a draw. The Azkals are just behind China, which also has seven points, on goal difference.

Syria sits at the top comfortably with 15 points from five wins and no losses. Maldives is fourth with six points from two wins and three losses, while Guam is at the bottom with no wins and five defeats.

The Azkals’ last match was 0-1 loss to Syria back on Nov. 19, 2019 at the Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, UAE.
