Cebu City to reroute traffic near Carbon starting March 22

THE Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) and the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will enforce a traffic rerouting scheme for Carbon Market shoppers starting Monday, March 22, 2021.

Vehicles will now enter Escaño Street corner Magallanes Street and exit M.C. Briones Street going to the Senior Citizens’ Park.

For shoppers, entrance and exit will be at Escario Street, Manalili Street, and M.C. Briones Street.

No entry for the following streets:

• Kawit Street

• El Filibusterismo Street

• Calderon Street

• Plaridel Street

• F. Gonzales Street

This is the traffic plan pushed by CCPO and CCTO and approved by Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella.

Strict implementation

CCPO Director Col. Josefino Ligan said they will be strictly implementing the rerouting scheme in preparation for the Holy Week (March 28, 2021 to April 3, 2021) so that vehicles and shoppers will not crowd the Carbon Market.

He also said that under the rerouting scheme, private vehicles and motorcycles cannot enter the market. Allowed to enter will be vehicles carrying supply to be sold at the market and delivery trucks, but only at Warwick Barracks.

CCPO will deploy 36 policemen with the help of the Task Force Kasaligan; Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification, and Enhancement team; and City Environmental Sanitation and Enforcement Team.

Wearing face masks will also be strictly enforced in the market.

“As early as now, we are preparing for the Holy Week so that the incident last year won’t happen again,” said Ligan.

Last year, photos of people buying ingredients for binignit at Carbon Market circulated online. Many blame this incident for contributing to the increase of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the city. (AYB/With NRC)
