AS PART of its disaster preparedness efforts and risk reduction for local livestock and poultry sector, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of Negros Occidental has brought its "barangay clinic" in two northern Negros Occidental towns.

The activity was conducted at Barangay Salamanca in Toboso and Barangay Buenavista in Calatrava earlier this week.

The PVO provided services like deworming, consultation, dog vaccination, vitamin B supplementation of pet and livestock animals.

It also conducted regular meetings of paravets, who are considered as the extension arms of the provincial government in the delivery of animal health extension services at the grassroots level.

The meetings were attended by 40 volunteers in Calatrava and 15 volunteers in Toboso.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the PVO's veterinary medical missions have been very successful because of the voluntary services rendered by paraveterinarians.

Decena said on top of the veterinary services extended by the PVO, personnel of the District Field Unit I also provided dewormers, antibiotic solubles, electrolytes, vitamins and vaccines for free.

All in all, 83 heads of dogs were vaccinated against rabies during the "barangay clinic."

A total of 85 heads of cattle, 35 heads of carabao and 154 heads of goat were also consulted and treated, dewormed and vitamin supplemented.

The PVO served a total of 127 clients consisting of animal raisers in the two barangays.

Decena said the success of the said activity was made possible in collaboration with the Municipal Governments of Toboso and Calatrava, Provincial Veterinary District Field Unit District I and paraveterinarians of the respective local government units.

The PVO is optimistic to continuously conduct series of veterinary medical mission provincewide and reaching the most remote barangays in order to promote optimum level of productivity and prevention of possible disease outbreak amid the unstable weather condition experience nowadays, he added.*
