Globe eyes launch of 5G services in tri-cities soon

SUBSCRIBERS of major telecommunications player Globe Telecom Inc. in the highly urbanized cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu will soon experience the speed and quality of a 5G network.

In anticipation of this development, mobile phone users looking to buy new units should get those that are 5G ready, said Adonis Evangelista, regional sales head of Globe Telecom.

“Our engineering team is in full force in laying the foundation for the ground launch soon of our 5G signal. And they are doing well. There are already pilot areas being installed with 5G in Cebu City,” he said.

He said the 5G signal depends on a phone’s capacity.

There is a wide array of brands that is 5G capable, he noted.

“As early as now, since we’re already on our way there, we have to prepare for it. We have to invest already. If you’re planning to buy a new phone right now, you have to take into consideration whether it is already 5G ready,” he said.

“In the coming months or years, we can already experience this. 5G is very attractive and promising. Everyone is actually excited for 5G and people’s expectations are high,” he added.

In a statement, the company said it was the first mobile operator in Southeast Asia to commercially launch 5G AirFiber for home use in 2019.

Globe launched its 5G for mobile in 2020. It continues to expand its 5G network, which already covers 82 percent of Metro Manila.

Evangelista said they have already established more than half of their targeted 5G sites.

“Hopefully, within the coming months, we can do a ground launch. Once everything is in place and everything is tested well, we can already commercially launch it,” he said. (JOB)
