A MANDAUE CITY-based karate club secured the top spot in the recently concluded 1st Mayor Carmelo "Pogi" G. Lazatin Jr. Invitational Open Virtual Kata E-Tournament last March 13 and 14, 2021 after securing 13 golds, four silvers and two bronze medals.

Members of the Sports Karatedo Organization (SKO) based in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City were declared as over-all champions after securing 19 medals during the virtual karate competition.

Members of SKO who secured gold medals are Janine Narboada (Under 15 Advance Kata and Under 15 Open Belt Kata), Rose Mabelle Seares (Above 18 Advance Kata and Above 18 Open Belt Kata), Grenabelle O. Damas (Above 18 Intermediate Kata), Alexis Carmeli Patalinghug (Under 12 Advance Kata and Under 12 Open Belt Kata), Christine Marie Sacedon (Under 17 Intermediate Kata), Mia Tariman (Under 9 Novice Kata), Joshua Narboada (Under 12 Advance Kata and Under 12 Open Belt Kata) and John Rans Q. Mahinay (Under 17 Intermediate Kata and Under 17 Open Belt kata).

Sacedon and her sister Eliza and Leonor also secured silver medals in Under 17 Open Belt Kata, Under 17 Intermediate Kata and Above 18 Open Belt Kata, respectively.

Aside from the Sacedon sisters, Natalie Tangaro also secured a silver medal in the Above 18 Intermediate Kata category.

While Leonor and Julienne Ramille Rama secured bronze medals in the Above 18 Intermediate Kata and Under 12 Intermediate Kata categories, respectively.

Jess Paredes, SKO's founder and chief instructor, told SunStar Cebu that the secret to the success of his students lies in continuous practice.

"My students strive to perfect their art through daily practice. Through discipline and always heeding to the instruction of their coaches, they continue to become better at what they do," Paredes said.

Despite prohibitions against mass gathering during the Covid-19 pandemic, Paredes said he continues to meet and practice with his students through online means.

Even with the limitations, Paredes said he continues to see improvement in his students especially on how they have secured victories in previous competitions.

Last December, SKO won overall in the first ever Karate Pilipinas Inc. (KPI) Virtual E-Kata competition. The group only fielded 10 athletes but secured eight medals, one silver and one bronze medal.(JKV)
