Suspect in Sibugay vice mayor’s killing arrested, cohort killed

A MAN was killed in a gunfight with the police during the arrest of a suspect in the killing of Vice Mayor Restituto Calonge of Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Ermahudin Manguda was served an arrest warrant for two counts of murder at around 10 a.m. Thursday, March 25, in Purok Bombil, Barangay Igat (Island) in Margosatubig town, Zamboanga del Sur.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas said a gunfight erupted when Manguda’s three associates fired at the police.

He identified them as Al Mua, Maide Balugtod Zulueta and a certain Jenal.

Jenal died on the spot while the two others fled on a pumpboat.

Recovered during the operation was a caliber 45 pistol with one magazine loaded with eight live ammunition.

Sinas said the suspects are members of the Anwar Ansang Group, a known criminal group operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Calonge and his companion were gunned down on February 26 at the Mabuhay town plaza.

Two others were wounded during the incident. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
