Pangan: Despite the loans

THE very inquisitive Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson is just living up to his pre-police general image: ever inquisitive, asking probing questions and salivating for investigations and their solutions.

Now his topic is on the huge loans and grants given to us to acquire so many vaccines as to cover almost all the population of the country.

He has observed that vaccines arrived just in trickles despite a total of some P126.75 billion mostly from foreign donors.

The loans were sourced from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Asia Infrastructure and Investment Bank.

More foreign countries like China, which donated the initial doses of Sinovac, have donated funds purportedly for the purchase of enough vaccines so that the health authorities would not have reasons to say that the supply of vaccines is inadequate.

There should be an exhaustive accounting of the funds borrowed and received in order to erase the presumption that some people got enriched at the expense of others.

United opposition. Isambayan is the new group formed by so-called opposition elites composed of prominent personalities led by former Supreme Court senior associate justice Antonio Carpio, former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, former DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) Secretary Alberto del Rosario and others. It dangles a formidable ticket composed of Vice President Leni Robredo, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso and more.

It is hoped that this united opposition will produce beneficial changes and benefits to the ailing country.
