DAVAO City's Sydney Sy Tancontian, who recently received a citation from the annual San Miguel Corporation (SMC)-Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards, looks forward to competing in the Asian Championships & Asian Youth And Junior Sambo Championships and World Sambo Championships this year.

Tancontian was cited for the first time in the prestigious annual PSA Awards for copping the bronze medal in the bubble-like World Sambo Championships 2020 in Novi Sad, Serbia.

"I’m very thankful po to be given a citation by one of the most prestigious award giving bodies in sports po dito sa atin (in the country). Parang last year lang po, chaperone ako ni Chino sa PSA awards but this year, nasali po ako (I was just a chaperone to Chino during the PSA Awards last year)," she told this writer via Facebook interview, pertaining to her younger brother Chino.

The Dabawenya, meanwhile, said she hopes to compete again this year since the last tournament she had joined was the one held in Serbia last November 2020.

Tancontian said, "Hoping po makasali sa Asian championship and world championship. Yun pa lang naman po yung mga events na medyo assured na po na matutuloy (I'm hoping to see action in the Asian championship and world championship. Those are the only events that are certainly pushing through)."

The Asian Championships & Asian Youth And Junior Sambo Championships is slated June 4 to 6 while the World Sambo Championships is on November 12 to 14. Both tournaments will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

While she continues to train daily, she also attends webinars being an elected member of the Athletes Commission of International Sambo Fédération (Fias), and complies with her school works. She is a second year college student of the University of Santo Tomas, taking up Sports Wellness and Management.

"Nag-focus din po muna ako sa academics ko (I'm also focusing on my academics)," she added.

Tancontian clinched a bronze in the 30th Southeast Asian Games 2019 women's kurash competition. She also bagged bronzes in the World Youth and Juniors Sambo Championships 2019 at the Sports Complex Uzbekistan, 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships in Chungju, South Korea in September 2019; World Sambo Championships 2018 held in Bucharest, Romania; and in the 2019 Sambo World Cup Kharlapiev Memorial Competition in Moscow, Russia in March 2019.
