Cut Above the Rest

FOR something different from the usual run to the market or butcher shop, Cebuanos can now enjoy an elevated premium meat experience at the recently opened La Carne meat shop in Cebu.

Proprietors Jose Ma. “Jovy” Tuaño and wife Janet opened the first La Carne store in Abu Dhabi in 2014 and have since grown a steady following of returning customers and of meat lovers online. La Carne has nearly 11,000 followers on its Instagram, where meat enthusiasts can learn everything about selecting and preparing premium meat.

La Carne offers grass-fed lamb cuts and certified angus and wagyu beef with no added hormones or antibiotics. The meat is sourced from top-notch producers like Stockyard Beef (founded in 1958), John Dee (founded in 1939) and Rangers Valley (founded in 1839). To bring even more to the table, the team is working on adding more producers like Jack’s Creek from Australia, Silver Fern Farms from New Zealand, and hopefully also A5 Japanese Wagyu.

Unsure of what to choose? La Carne’s staff is happy to talk (butcher) shop to help customers decide. With the shop’s mostly open layout with a large viewing window, customers can see exactly how their meat of choice is being carefully sliced and prepared.

The La Carne experience is not just about the products being offered, but also its advocacy to educate clients for the best meat shopping experience, including expert butchery services like roast tying, sausage making, fine butcher slicing and even knife sharpening. La Carne’s team of butchers and chefs has over 70 years of combined experience from some of Cebu’s top hotels, Dumaguete, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and U.A.E.

La Carne is the only multi-brand retail store and family butchery licensed by Certified Angus Beef U.S.A. and Meat and Livestock Australia.

To the Tuaño family, La Carne is not just a shop, but is inspired by Jovy’s mother, Thelma Badelles, who ran a butchery on D. Jakosalem Street in the ‘70s. Jovy believes it’s now the best time to bring La Carne to his hometown, as people continue to spend more time in their homes and kitchens.

La Carne is located on the ground floor of 88th Avenue, Gov. M. Cuenco Ave., Cebu City, and is open daily (except Monday) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Contact La Carne on Instagram or on its official Facebook page to schedule a visit or steak tasting, or place an order for deliveries around Cebu up to Liloan and Lapu-Lapu.
