Eastern Visayas observes peaceful Holy Week

EASTERN Visayas observed a generally peaceful Holy Week from March 28 to April 4, 2021 as no major incidents were recorded throughout the region, the police regional office said on Tuesday, April 6.

“The peaceful observance of the Holy Week is the result of sustained police presence and heightened implementation of laws and ordinances,” said Brigadier General Ronaldo De Jesus, regional director.

In a statement, the police official said around 5,120 personnel were deployed to different places of convergence, recreational areas, churches, and other places of devotion to ensure the security of the public during the Holy Week observance.

Police also provided security measures to church dignitaries, pilgrims, and other national and local officials during the historic commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the First Easter Mass in Limasawa, Southern Leyte on March 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, police in the region arrested 307 illegal gamblers, 59 illegal fishers, 19 illegal loggers, and nine illegal drug personalities from March 29 to April 5.

Regionwide manhunt operations also led to the apprehension of 19 most wanted persons and 64 other wanted Persons, according to police regional spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ma. Bella Rentuaya.

Operating units have already prepared various charges against the arrested suspects. (SunStar Philippines)
