Active Covid-19 cases in Philippines hit new high

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday, April 8, 2021, reported 9,216 new coronavirus infections, bringing the number of active cases to a new high.

The DOH case bulletin listed 167,279 active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities, or 20.2 percent of the total case count of 828,366.

These were more than double the 83,109 recorded on August 15, 2020, the highest last year.

Of the active cases, 97.6 percent had mild symptoms, 1.2 percent were asymptomatic, 0.29 percent developed moderate symptoms, 0.5 percent were severely ill and another 0.5 percent were in critical condition.

The DOH also confirmed 60 additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 14,119. The case fatality rate swung back to 1.7 percent.

There were 598 new recoveries, bringing the total to 646,968.

The positivity rate remained elevated at 20.8 percent out of the 39,969 samples tested for Sars-CoV-2 as of noon of April 7. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
