Contractors set to explain delays in Capitol’s road projects’ completion

THE construction firms that won contracts for road projects in towns of Cebu Province will explain before Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia in a meeting at the Capitol in Cebu City why they failed to finish the projects despite the extension given to them.

Set to join the meeting on April 21, 2021, are the representatives from Square Cube Construction, Leda Construction Inc., Pablo S. Labasbas Construction Corp., and AT Builders and General Merchandise.

The Capitol released a statement expressing the governor’s disappointment as the road projects should have been completed last February.

Most of the contractors asked for an extension of the deadline despite some of them handling road projects that are not extensive. Lacking equipment was their main reason for the delay in completing the road projects.

The incomplete road projects are in the cities of Talisay and Carcar, and in the municipalities of San Fernando, Sibonga, Argao, Barili, Dalaguete, Consolacion, Sogod and Tabogon.

Last April 7, Garcia fired an ultimatum to the construction firms, telling them to finish the road projects in soonest possible time or the Provincial Government would terminate their contracts if they fail to do so and they would not be allowed to join in any future projects under her administration.

“Please don’t make any mistakes. I’m not going to allow you to slow down our progress here,” she said.

Despite the Covid-19 pandic, constructions of government projects have not stopped as these are considered essential.

As of March 19, 2021, the Provincial Engineering’s Office reported that the Capitol had spent P4.3 billion on road concreting and improvement projects in provincial and barangay roads in seven legislative districts. (ANV / KAL)
