THE Day of Valor or the Araw ng Kagitingan has its historical significance in Philippine history as it marks the greatness of Filipino fighters along with the American soldiers during Japanese occupancy in World War II.

The Day of Valor is a public holiday in the country wherein government offices are closed to commemorate the said event to honor the people who helped attain democracy and freedom in the country.

I know of someone born on this day who also has a great sense of valor and a heart to serve others. I speak of lawyer Belinda Siason Gochuico who was blessed by God to serve the legal needs of her fellowmen.

She defended people who can afford her legal services and likewise those who cannot wherein she listens to their concerns and extends the necessary legal assistance if need be.

She said that there were many instances that her services were pro bono (free of charge) because she believes that helping others will be her plus factor to the Lord whom she faithfully serves and follows.

Being born on April 9 somehow coincides with her character as a natural leader, defender, resilient, kind, compassionate, and courageous.

"I am a fighter who does not retreat from life's ups and downs. Those who come to my aid, I help in whatever way I can. I believe that when I help, I also receive help from God," she said.

Lawyer Siason Gochuico and her staff normally attend mass at San Sebastian Cathedral every day as their ordinary routine. It can only be altered if the schedule runs in conflict with her schedule in court hearings. But this is part of her devotion to God which she imparted to her employees.

On April 9, she marked her birthday by offering her new law office to the Lord through the conduct of blessing with a simple celebration.

She owes everything to the Lord who sustains her, her family, her office staff and her clients.

One thing that makes her birthday significant is the coincidence that it is being observed as a public holiday. Not all have been given the opportunity to have their birthdays fall on a public holiday.

"It just so happened that I was born on this day and I thanked my parents for raising me and my siblings well as God-fearing and loving individuals. It is really important now to value everything that comes our way. We need to help when help is needed. We have to be kind and compassionate to others and be courageous to face life's blows and celebrate when success is achieved," she said.

She thanked those who greeted her on her birthday. But her mission to serve others and the Lord continues.
