THE Cebu Provincial Government recently launched the Sugbusog sa Eskuylahan: Estudyanteng Busog, Luwas ug Himsog, a replication of the Sugbusog program that Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia introduced to households and puroks in 2020 to help Cebu generate enough food supply during the pandemic.

Sugbusog sa Eskuylahan aims to revive the interest of the youth in agriculture and teach them the value of growing and producing their food. It also aims to boost one’s immune system and cultivate a healthy lifestyle by encouraging schoolchildren to eat vegetables.

Through the cooperation of the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Agriculture (DA), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the program will involve all public elementary and high schools in Cebu Province.

The Cebu Provincial Government signed a memorandum of understanding with these government agencies on Thursday, April 8, 2021. The parties involved also signed a pledge of commitment.

DA will provide free seeds, such as pipino, okra, tawong, and squash. It will also provide herbal and medicinal plants.

DOST 7 will teach schools how to prepare various products from the harvest. DepEd 7 and DepEd Cebu Province will monitor the schools to ensure the implementation of the program.

Garcia said there will be prizes for the best schools the program will produce. (NRC/With ANV)
