Briones: Island mentality

On The Go
Briones: Island mentality

YOU know what’s weird?

Because we live in an island, sometimes we forget that there’s a far much bigger world out there that doesn’t give a hoot about what goes on within our midst.

Because in the scheme of things, Cebu, and I’m talking about the whole island and not just the city, is but “a speck of dust in this vast universe.”

Do you really think our neighbors in the region, say Singapore or Malaysia, care that the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas and the Department of Health 7 have been disputing allegations that the health workers they deployed to the National Capital Region to help deal with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation there were coerced?

Wait. That may be too harsh of a word. Perhaps “left with no choice” is better.

To be honest, I don’t even think Bohol or even Siquijor cares either. After all, why entertain rumors? Unless, there was an iota of truth to them.

In Cebu City, the City Council has asked the Vaccine Advisory Board to study the proposal of conducting a drive-through vaccination against Covid-19.

The plan hasn’t even gotten off the board yet and some people are already saying it’s not feasible.

Oh, I agree. There are other factors that need to be considered like how will the City monitor the people who have just been inoculated? But I don’t see authorities making the same fuss when people get their anti-rabies or flu shot.

I honestly believe City Councilor Alvin Dizon is on the right track. The City will have its hands full injecting hundreds of thousands of people with the vaccine, assuming, of course, that they will agree to be injected. So it needs to find a way that is expeditious and convenient and, at the same time, safe.

The City needs to keep its options open.

In a way, we are lucky to be isolated from the REAL problems out there. At least, we don’t have to worry about the diplomatic impasse happening within our territorial jurisdiction. Although if it does escalate, we will find ourselves stuck between a rock and a hard place and we won’t have a choice on the matter.

Because in the global scheme of things, the Philippines, especially Cebu, and I’m talking about the whole island and not just the city, is but a bit player relegated to the background while China and the US get the plum roles.

In a way, I’d rather be aghast at the sight of all those beautiful infants waiting to be baptized, their tiny faces exposed like there was no pandemic, than worry about the thought of war right on our doorstep.
