KMU plans noise barrage, DOLE eyes job fair on Labor Day

LABOR group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) is preparing for a noise barrage on May 1, Labor Day, to condemn the poor condition of workers amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

"Let us make some noise by clanging our pots and make the deaf administration of Duterte hear our cry for more assistance. It is simply an insult for the government to make us line up the whole day for its meager P1,000 assistance," said KMU secretary general Jerome Adonis.

He said the workers need sufficient wages while displaced employees must be given decent cash assistance.

"Our call is give daily wage earners P100 additional wage, while those without jobs must be provided P10,000 per month," said Adonis.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), meanwhile, plans to resume the conduct of a nationwide job fair on May 1.

Since gatherings are still prohibited, DOLE Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay said in a televised news briefing that the event will be held online.

"We are already preparing for a massive job fair for May 1. It will be different this time due to the pandemic, where mass gatherings are prohibited," said Tutay.

Tutay said their field personnel are already busy looking for possible participants in the job fair.

"All our regional offices and Public Employment Service Office (PESOs) are already looking for employers, who may want to participate, as well as job vacancies," said the labor official.

Simultaneous job fairs offering local and overseas jobs are held across the country during Labor Day.

Tutay said they will also hold a job summit this year.

"The purpose of the summit is to lay down the recovery plan for the employment opportunities lost during the pandemic. Employers, labor, and the government shall present our employment recovery agenda," said Tutay.

Earlier, the national government launched its three-year National Employment Recovery Strategy (NERS), which serves as the blueprint for decent employment and entrepreneurship under the new normal. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
