Viray: To a son who is on the frontline

DEAR Arvee,

More than ever, I’d like to say I am proud of you.

You are a nurse. You work in a government hospital. The health of your patients is paramount. Your welfare may have been taken for granted by the government, but you have taken your job passionately. You are very happy when a sick man recovers. You are happier to see your partner-doctors administer to the sick. You are happiest to serve your country despite tempting greener pasture from abroad.

Then, thunder bolt strikes. The pandemic -- Covid-19 -- tested your resolve. The disease is an unseen enemy. Your name was called in the Covid ward. You willingly accepted the challenge. You saw the patients losing breathe. You witnessed the deterioration of service due to numerous clients. You saw the beds used in full capacity. You were sorry to see that some patients had to be refused admission due to lack of rooms and personnel.

You conquered your fears. The disease is super contagious. You had to wait for personal protective equipments to arrive. You had to isolate yourself from your family after your clinic hours. You are not to kiss nor embrace your wife and your son. You had to eat alone. You had to sleep by yourself. You bravely face Covid-19 despite the dangers of contagion in your association with afflicted patients. You were even discriminated against by some selfish and callous people.

In your one year struggle with patients with Covid-19, you have grown into my eyes. You are a responsible front liner who has seen the face of death and refuse to surrender. You aided patients regardless of their pockets. You are there when you are needed.

Several years from now when this pandemic is gone, you will be asked the question: Where were you when Covid-19 rampaged mankind? Your swift answer is: I fought the enemy and was right in the front line.

Your aging father can only nod in agreement.

I love you,

Dad Atlee
