Briones: Double tragedy

No good will come to anyone who gets involved in criminal activities, whether directly or indirectly.

It’s a sweeping statement, I know. And I do apologize for getting on my moral high horse yet again, but I can’t help it after reading about the fate of the woman who complained against members of the Sawang Calero Police Station.

I won’t name her in deference to her two children and her husband, who, according to news reports, she was texting on the night she was shot dead in Barangay Basak Pardo, Cebu City on Monday, April 19, 2021, by two men riding in tandem.

She was reportedly trying patch things up with him when she was killed. Perhaps, she was trying to get her life together after getting mixed up with bad elements, which makes the whole thing even more tragic.

You see, the victim was reportedly the lover of a big-time drug personality who is currently in jail and of one of the policemen whom she accused of extortion and rape.

So whoever was behind her death could only be either one of them, especially since her lover in jail allegedly found out about her relationship with the policeman. Or not. Of course, that’s pure conjecture since investigators have yet to solve the case. Heck, they don’t even have a motive.

They tried to question her alleged policeman-lover four hours after the incident, but he died after shooting himself inside the comfort room of the Regional Special Operations Group.

You might wonder why a cop who had been relieved would bring a gun to an investigation. Or why he would have one while under camp restriction. Or better yet, why he would take his own life.

This story is beginning to unravel like a prime time telenovela, except it has a better plot and an abrupt ending.

According to the Commission on Human Rights 7, the woman had been receiving threats from the policeman.

They offered her a security detail under their witness protection program, but she turned them down.

She was initially afraid and anxious. But then she probably thought all was well after she came out in public with her fantastic tale and her alleged tormentors were relieved from duty. She might have had something up her sleeve that would send them to jail for the rest of their lives to explain why she would let her guard down.

Or maybe she was just naïve in thinking that her past wouldn’t catch up with her and I intended that to be tongue in cheek.

Well, you all know what happens when you play with fire. You eventually get burned.
