(UPDATED) The number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the country continued to decline as the Department of Health (DOH) reported time-based recoveries for the fifth consecutive day on Thursday, April 22, 2021.
New infections also fell below 10,000 for the fourth straight day, but deaths exceeded 100 for the second day in a row.
The DOH case bulletin on Thursday listed 8,767 new Covid-19 cases, which raised the cumulative case count to 971,049.
There were 105 additional deaths, lower than the previous day’s 124 but still more than 100 in a day. These brought the death toll to 16,370. The case fatality rate remained at 1.69 percent.
With the DOH now employing its time-based recovery scheme daily instead of weekly, there were 17,138 new recoveries.
These increased the total recoveries to 846,691, or 87.2 percent of the cumulative case count.
These also further reduced the active cases to 107,988, lowering its proportion to 11.1 percent of the total count.
The number of active cases dropped by 95,722, or around 47 percent, in just five days from a record high of 203,710 on April 17 because of the time-based tagging methodology.
Under this scheme, coronavirus-positive persons without Covid-19 symptoms in more than 14 consecutive days are declared as clinically recovered.
Meanwhile, the daily positivity rate as of April 20 was 17.5 percent of the 48,133 samples tested. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
