Pangan: A culture of impunity and hate

BROADCAST worldwide is the current unrest in Myanmar (formerly Burma) where the democratically-elected officials led by Ang San Suu Kyi were deposed by a military junta in a coup.

Now the country is beset by daily protests where hundreds have been killed, including children and there are no indications that peace and stability will eventually reign in that country.

Former US Ambassador to Myanmar Mitchell rued the upheaval and said over CNN that the democratic icon Ang San Suu Kyi might have been deposed because of her ideals and pivot to China. He called on Asean and world leaders to exert efforts to mediate and eventually lessen the intensity of the conflict and go back to democracy.

Meanwhile, in the US, shooters are having a heyday, killing people at random and showing no remorse for their dastardly acts of violence. Atlanta and California witnessed mass shootings at a spa and supermarket.

Also in the US, more Caucasians are showing their despise and hatred towards Asian-Americans. Videos were shown that a huge, burly man suddenly attacked an elderly Asian-American, kicking her in the gut and repeatedly kicked her while she was already lying on the pavement! Why such hatred?

In stark contrast, here in our country, we strongly advocate love and compassion.

ABS-CBN’s Lingkod Kapamilya and Pantawid ng Pag-ibig show the way to genuine and selfless service to those in need.

Despite the government’s apathy and indifference to their application to renew their franchise, ABS-CBN continues to reach out to the needy, reaching out to those in far-flung areas while seeking the public’s help through donations to sustain their relief drive. See? We are witness to its continued service to the poorest of the poor, especially the victims of floods, landslides and tropical storms. The government remains steadfast not to renew its franchise, thanks largely to the stubborn resistance of our President!

Also doing our people great service is the SM Foundation, its SM Cares and other branches which are ready to extend help and relief to those in need without awaiting recognition and compensation. Such is the golden aim of SM Foundation.
