Baguio residents urged to reject bingo operations

BAGUIO Bishop Victor Bendico has called on the public to strongly reject the expansion of bingo and other gambling operations in the city.

In a pastoral letter, Bendico urged the faithful to join the signature campaign protesting the issuance of a permit to RCC Global Entertainment Inc. to operate electronic and traditional bingo games.

The Baguio and Benguet Ecumenical Group had launched a signature drive to push for the revocation of the permit.

Bendico said their opposition is in line with the long standing position of his predecessors, Bishops Ernesto Salgado and Carlito Cenzon, against gambling.

"We cannot be proud to say that the City of Baguio is a peaceful city if there is havoc in many families due to the gambling activities approved by people, who were elected to take care of the common good of the electoral populace," said Bendico.

Earlier, the City Council of Baguio passed resolutions approving the request of RCC Global Entertainment, Inc. to operate electronic and traditional bingo and other games in the city.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has already rejected the twin resolutions citing the absence of the mandatory public consultation. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
