Solon: Worst nutrition excuses

Solon: Worst nutrition excuses

We hear it all the time. We know how important it is to eat healthy yet still neglect doing something about the way we currently eat. Sometimes, we are all quite guilty of doing this even if we know that these excuses impact our health and progress.

Here are some common excuses we hear about nutrition:

I’m used to this way of eating

Sure, you can be used to doing things a certain way but it doesn’t absolve you of doing something about it. It takes time to change, but we all have to start from somewhere. Not starting and doing something just makes defeat more inevitable.

It’s expensive

It can be true sometimes but if you know what to look out for, healthy eating costs can be comparable to snacking on junk food. Swapping out that chocolate bar or that pack of chips for an apple actually helps you save more money. And if you think healthy eating is expensive, just think about the costs of hospitalization or medication and tell me which is more costly.

I’m too busy; you don’t know what my day looks like

It’s true. We do get busy, and meeting those deadlines at work are our first and foremost priority. However, preparing our meals ahead or having go-to healthy choices for food can help us save on time and making those “decisions.” When strapped for time, our household has around three choices to order healthy take-out food. I encourage everyone to put up a system for healthy eating when you get busy.

My metabolism is slow; diets don’t work for me, it is my genetics

Whenever someone says this, it’s just dismissing responsibility to the things that we have control about. If you’ve been eating in an unhealthy manner for the past 10 years, eating healthy for 10 days will not automatically get you healthier.

We are guilty of making excuses for the way we eat. I used to think that I could out-train a bad diet. I learned the hard way that this was just not possible. Eating healthily has allowed me to train more optimally, recover faster, and improve the quality of my life. I’m sure it will for you, too. While there are many guides on eating healthy on the internet, consulting a nutritionist and/or registered dietician can help give you more detailed guidance on a nutrition plan that is tailored to you.
