KALIBO Vice Mayor Cynthia Dela Cruz urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Aklan to widen the town’s roads to spur economic development.

Dela Cruz said she filed a resolution asking the DPWH, as some roads, specifically that of Sitio Libtong in Barangay Estancia, need to be widened and improved.

"I urged the DPWH-Aklan, especially to District Engineer Alejandro Ventilacion, for the project as an alternative road going to the different barangays of Kalibo," Dela Cruz said.

Earlier, the Kalibo Municipal Council, in its desire to make Kalibo competitive in terms of transportation, formulated a transportation and traffic management plan.

The plan aims to “lay down the foundation of growth in a short and long term process that will basically address the present and future transport system.”

"Libtong Road in Sitio Libtong, Barangay Estancia is classified as an old provincial road based on the 1931 cadastral survey of Kalibo which is an important road network leading to and from the Central Business and Institutional District of the Municipality of Kalibo and serve as an alternative or secondary road used to re-route and help traffic congestion along crossing Rotunda intersections especially during Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-atihan Festival," said Dela Cruz.

Currently, the two-way vehicle condition of this road is taking a heavy toll on motorists and commuters, considering that it is a busy thoroughfare in the village, “being an alternative or secondary transport network to the church, schools, markets, farms, offices, etc.”

“Hence, the need to improve and widen this road to its standard is very necessary in time vital to public safety and welfare,” added Dela Cruz. (SunStar Philippines)
