THE Sum-ag National High School in Bacolod City commemorated on Tuesday, April 27, the Quincentennial celebration of the historic victory of the “Battle of Mactan.”

Spearheaded by the Araling Panlipunan department under Johnny C. Villaruel, the school-based event was attended by more than a hundred SNHS faculty and staff, who tread memory lane and see that eternity remembers the victory of humanity's courage as embodied in the hearts of early Filipinos when they triumphed over the conquistadors.

According to the statement from the Schools Division of Bacolod City-Araling Panlipunan, headed by Education Program Supervisor Pinky Pamela S. Guanzon, the country remembers the “Battle of Mactan” Tuesday, April 27, which is being immortalized on April 27, 1521.

"As we gaze on the flame in time, we find that nothing is impossible to those who dream. This flame blazes like a beacon in history to remind the world that the Philippines prevailed, rises and conquers," it said.

Why do we celebrate the victory of 'Battle of Mactan?

According to history, during the 16th century, Spain was one of the world's leaders in maritime exploration. And, that Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan led the expedition with 270 men on board five ships -- Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepcion, Victoria, and Santiago.

But after Magellan's death, the remaining crew left for the Moluccas and sailed back to Spain on September 6, 1522. They completed their journey for almost three years. (PR)
