TOURISTS, pilgrims and the faithful are temporarily banned in Vito Church in Barangay Vito, Sagay City.

Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon III issued an executive order banning the entry of tourists in the barangay, which has been famous among Catholic believers and has become one of the tourist attractions in the city.

The ban was implemented as the barangay is set to celebrate the feast day of its patron saint San Vicente Ferrer from May 1 to 2.

The San Vicente Ferrer Shrine is a popular destination for pilgrims and is known for "Palapak," wherein an image of San Vicente Ferrer is placed on different parts of the body of the pilgrims, which they believe can cure ailments.

According to Marañon's executive order released Monday, April 28, all tourists will not be allowed to enter the barangay from April 30 to May 2. The recommendation to close off the barangay was made by the city's Covid-19 task force.

Marañon said the festivities attract a huge number of travelers coming from other cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental and even from neighboring Cebu.

Entry in the barangay has also been limited to essential travel only, meaning relatives and friends of residents in the area are also covered by the travel restriction.

Despite the travel ban, Marañon will still allow religious services and activities in Barangay Vito, although he reminded local residents to follow the City's health protocols.

The San Vicente Ferrer Shrine has also been limited to a 30-percent seating attendance during their religious services.

As of April 27, Sagay City posted a total of 538 confirmed Covid-19 cases, of which 35 were tagged as active, 488 were recoveries and 15 were deaths.
