Labor Day peaceful despite protests, police say

DESPITE the various protest actions, the celebration of Labor Day on May 1, 2021 was orderly and peaceful, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas said.

He said around 1,850 people converged in separate venues across the country.

Sinas commended his men for exercising maximum tolerance towards the protesters, especially in the National Capital Region and in provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal.

Gatherings are prohibited in areas under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ). The NCR and the four provinces, also known as NCR plus, along with Santiago City, Quirino and Abra are under MECQ.

Among the groups that participated in the protest actions were Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng mga Maralita ng Lungsod, Kapatiran sa Dalawang Gulong, Akbayan, Bayan Muna, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Gabriela, Alliance of Progressive Labor, Anakbayan UP and Alliance of Concerned Students UPB.

They demanded for wage hike for laborers and social amelioration, or ayuda, for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sinas said the protesters peacefully dispersed at around 1 p.m. Saturday. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
