Less than 10,000 Covid cases for 2 straight weeks

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, May 2, 2021, reported 8,346 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), keeping the daily tally below 10,000 for two straight weeks.

The new infections brought the cumulative Covid-19 count in the country to 1,054,983. Of these, 71,472 or 6.8 percent were active cases.

The number of recoveries based on DOH’s time-based tagging strategy was higher than the new cases at 9,072, which increased the total to 966,080, or 91.6 percent of the cumulative case count.

There were also 77 additional mortalities, raising the death toll to 17,431. The case fatality rate declined to 1.65 percent.

New cases slowed down after reaching a new peak in early April. In the last 14 days from April 19 to May 2, cases remained below 10,000. The seven-day moving average has gone down to less than 8,300 in the last four days.

The National Capital Region (NCR) continued to have the highest 14-day running total of new cases, but this has gone down by nearly 34 percent to 42,894 as of May 1 from 64,631 on April 10.

Cases in Calabarzon have also decreased to 20,051 for the period. Other regions with the highest cases in the last two weeks were Central Luzon with 13,917, Cagayan Valley with 4,414 and Western Visayas with 3,988.

Among the cities and provinces, Quezon City also continued to have the highest 14-day running total but this has also gone down by more than 32 percent to 9,202 on May 1 from 13,693 on April 10.

Manila, which used to have the second highest number of new infections, reduced its 14-day running total to 4,660 on May 1 from 9,426 on April 10.

Other cities and provinces also posted declines with Cavite having 5,969 cases for the period, followed by Bulacan with 5,193 and Rizal with 5,142.

Globally, the Philippines remained at the 26th spot among countries with the highest number of cases, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center tracker.
