THE Municipal Government of Ilog, being one of the active and supportive local government units (LGUs) in the livestock development program of Negros Occidental, has received 97 heads of genetically improved free-range chicken (FRC) breeder stocks from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).

The stocks given through the Municipal Agriculture Office on Friday, April 30, consist of 44 heads of cockerel and 53 heads of pullets.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the dispersal of quality genetics of FRC extended to various LGUs and farmer associations is part of the provincial government's coronavirus disease (Covid-19) measures on helping Negrense families cope with the negative impact of the pandemic.

Decena said this will enable raisers to increase their income through egg and meat production, which will also ensure food security as well as contribute to reducing poverty in the province.

"Engaging in free-range chicken production has become an alternative source of daily income among Negrenses as it does not require big financial investment," he said, adding that "it has become a suitable business venture an emerging small-scale enterprise at this time for."

The FRC stocks dispersed were sourced from the nucleus farm of the Provincial Livestock Breeding Center and Dairy Farm (PLBCDF) in Barangay La Granja, La Carlota City.

The stocks have been known to have high quality protein and budget-friendly especially to small-scale farmers who cannot afford to buy commercial feeds.

Decena said raising FRC sourced from the PLBCDF only requires low-cost production inputs in terms of housing and feeds.

He said that in line with the agricultural productivity and food sufficiency efforts under the Abanse Negrense development agenda of the province, the PVO will continue to implement animal livelihood and dispersal projects this year.

Aside from stocks, the program also includes components like orientation and technical training extended to animal raisers and associations.

The PVO is closely working with the LGUs especially in the Municipality of Ilog for the implementation of more livestock projects in the southern Negros Occidental locality, he added.
