There’s no longer any doubt that the La Liga is the most exciting league this season.
With only four matches remaining, four teams have every chance of winning the title.
Atletico Madrid enjoys a flimsy lead with 76 points, followed by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona with 74 points apiece.
While Atletico, Real and Barca have played 34 matches as of this writing, Sevilla, which has 70 points, had a game in hand earlier this morning, May 4.
A win over Athletic Club would move Sevilla within three points of the league leaders, but a loss or draw could seriously hurt their chances at winning the La Liga.
That said, Matchday 35 happens to be the most crucial for all four pretenders to the title.
On May 8, Atletico could solidify its position on top if it triumphs over third place Barca.
Both Atleti’s and Barca’s performances over the last two games have been a mix bag.
Atletico lost 2-1 away to Athletic Club but bounced back with a 2-1 away win against Elche last Saturday, May 1.
Similarly, the Blaugrana lost 2-1 away to Granada, then made a stunning 3-2 come-from-behind recovery away against Valencia yesterday, May 3, that saw Lionel Messi scoring twice and Antoine Griezmann getting the equalizer.
These results make the Atletico vs. Barcelona encounter this Saturday, May 8, at the Camp Nou even more potentially explosive.
While erstwhile pichichi contender Luis Suarez has not found the back of the net in the last six La Liga matches, Atletico had to rely on Yannick Carrasco, Marcos Llorente and Angel Correa to deliver the all-important goals.
Barca, meanwhile, has Messi and Griezmann peaking at just the right time.
And if Atletico vs. Barca wasn’t enough, La Liga fans will have yet an equally crucial match two days later on May 10 as Real Madrid hosts Sevilla at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
While Sevilla will have plenty of rest prior to Monday’s all-or-nothing match, Real will have to hurdle its second leg Champions League semifinals match against formidable Chelsea, which enjoys an away goal advantage at Stamford Bridge following the 1-1 first leg draw.
Anything could happen on Matchday 35 at the La Liga, so don’t blink.
