3 employees under probe for Sogod office burglary

THREE employees working for the municipal government of Sogod, northern Cebu are being investigated for the alleged burglary of the town’s treasury on Tuesday afternoon, May 4, 2021.

But local police investigating the case said that two of the three employees of the Sogod Treasurer’s Office were only invited as “persons of interest.”

Lt. Warlito Tuñacao, Sogod town police chief, said the burglary occurred at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4.

According to Ricardo Rivera, the town’s assistant treasurer, he was picking up cash from the steel cabinet and found it containing only P30,000.

The office contained around P1 million in cash which was supposed to be used to fund for the town’s scholarship program.

Rivera immediately reported the cash loss to the police.

Tuñacao said they have requested the services of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco) Central Visayas to conduct a forensic examination on the town’s local treasury.

Tuñacao said they were also ordered by Sogod Mayor Richard Streegan to thoroughly look into the loss since this was not the first time that the local treasury was burglarized.

During their investigation, Tuñacao said, the safe deposit box where the stolen money was kept had no signs of forced entry.

They are also checking the CCTV cameras around the local treasury to check who were in the immediate vicinity at that time. (GPL / JKV)
