TRANSPORTATION Secretary Arthur Tugade, on Thursday, May 6, 2021, led the inspection of the 2.3 kilometers (km) South Road Properties (SRP) section of the 140-km Metro Cebu Bike Lane that is set to be open for public use by June 2021.

Edgar Tabacon, director of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 tasked to manage the construction of the project, said that as of the first week of May 2021, the accomplishment rate of the project is already at about 90 percent.

He said that the entire P150-million Bike Lane project will traverse Talisay City, Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Lapu Lapu City.

The full blast construction of the Bike Lane started in February 2020, Tabacon said.

The exclusive bike lane located at the right side of the Cebu South Coastal Road has a width of 5 meters with a pedestrian sidewalk of 3 meters, which is separated from the bike lane.

It also has a plant box of 1.5 meters. There are also shades along the bike lane for the bike racks and benches.

DOTr Assistant Secretary Mark Steven Pastor said that the project's premium is to ensure that the lanes are safe, continuous, and efficient not only for leisure but also for everyday use, especially by those who opt to make cycling as their means of transportation to work.

The DOTr also shared a Biker's Manual that contains the guidelines for bike lane use.

It said bike lanes can only be utilized by bicycles and light mobility vehicles or personal mobility devices weighing not more than 100 kilograms.

The maximum speed in bike lanes should also be 25 kilometers per hour while counter-flowing is also prohibited in the bike lanes.

Afterward, a ceremonial biking activity was held and led by the Sugbo Bike Lanes Boards (bike patrols) with its chairman Gerry Carillo, Pastor, DOTr Assistant Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairman Martin Delgra, and LTFRB 7 Director Eduardo Montealto.
