A TOTAL of 39 establishments will soon be able to serve alcoholic drinks after Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella signed Executive Order 130, which lifted the liquor ban, effective Thursday, May 6, 2021.

However, they’re still waiting to be issued a special permit to serve liquor.

The City Government anticipates more establishments to follow suit in the next few weeks.

They need to send representatives who will be trained to become health infection and prevention control officers by the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

After the training, the EOC, which is headed by deputy chief implementer City Councilor Joel Garganera, and the Business Permit and Licensing Office will inspect the establishments to check their setup and capacity to make sure that they’ll be able to implement minimum health protocols against coronavirus disease 2019.

Those who fulfilled all the requirements and were able to secure the special permit can go ahead and start serving liquor on Friday, May 7.

Mayor Labella imposed the liquor ban on Feb. 3 after Covid-19 cases in the city went up after the Christmas and Sinulog holidays.

Garganera said the ban exempted sari-sari and convenience stores as well as groceries as long as customers didn’t consume the liquor in their premises.

“They can sell since we allow that, but they (customers) are not allowed to drink in public view. We are not allowing that,” he said.

Police will apprehend anyone caught drinking in a public place.

Even though the liquor ban has been lifted, establishments still have to follow curfew hours, which begin at 11 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. (PAC / PJB)
