Convicted drug trafficker dies from Covid-19

THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said convicted drug trafficker Yu Yuk Lai, who had tested positive for coronavirus, suffered a heart attack and died Tuesday morning, May 11, 2021.

BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said Yu was declared dead at 9:47 a.m., Tuesday due to acute myocardial infarction at the East Avenue Medical Center, where she had been confined since May 4 for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Yu was arrested during a drug bust in a hotel in Metro Manila in November 1998. Seized during the operation were at least three kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu).

In 2001, she was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to life imprisonment along with her nephew.

While in detention, Yu allegedly continued to engage in illegal drugs trading, with authorities reporting the recovery of a large amount of cash and shabu packs during several raids in her cell at the Correctional Institution for Women. (SunStar Philippines)
