THE Zamboanga City government, through the City Peace and Order Council and the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council, has jointly resolved to request the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to fast-track the construction of its detention facility in Talisayan village that will house persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
“[The construction] is way delayed already,” said Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, chairperson of both councils.
“If nothing happens by June, we will get the property,” Salazar added.
The deferral was attributed to issues involving the original contractor.
Chief Inspector Nathaniel Aljas, city jail warden, said as of Sunday, May 9, both Buildings 1 and 2 of its Female Dorm were at 65 to 70 percent completion.
Aljas said Building 1 and Building 2 of its Male Dorm were at 35 to 40 percent and 10 to 15 percent completion, respectively.
The facility in Talisayan village, once completed, will serve as the new detention center of the BJMP.
At present, the detention facility of the BJMP is located in a community with a closely built residential area along Varela Street in Zone 2 village. (SunStar Zamboanga)
