Fil-Am champ Vera dethroned

INDIAN-CANADIAN contender Arjan Bhullar dethroned Filipino-American ONE Championship heavyweight champion Brandon Vera via second-round stoppage in ONE: “Dangal” on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

Bhullar, a former Olympic wrestler, unleashed a vicious ground-and-pound on a helpless Vera that forced the referee to intervene in the 4:27 mark and save him from more punishment.

The 43-year-old Vera did some damage early on with his heavy leg kicks.

Bhullar finished the first round strong by taking down Vera.

The 35-year-old Bhullar finally found his mark and wobbled Vera with an overhand right.

Bhullar continued to connect with his punches and Vera looked gassed out.

Bhullar threw Vera to the ground like a ragdoll and unleashed some heavy blows for the second-round finish.

Vera dropped to 16-9, while Bhullar improved to 10-1.

Vera suffered his first loss as a heavyweight in the ONE Championship. He won the inaugural belt back in 2015 with a head-kick knockout finish of Paul Cheng. He successfully defended his belt twice, against Hideki Sekine and Mauro Cerilli.

Bhullar became the first MMA world champion of Indian descent. (EKA)
