(UPDATED) Mexico's Andrea Meza was crowned Miss Universe 2020 on Sunday, May 16, 2021 (US time), besting contestants from 73 other countries and territories.

Meza, 26, succeeded Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa, who was the longest-reigning queen due to a hiatus in 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We live in a society that more and more is more than advanced and as we advance as a society, we've also advanced with stereotypes. Nowadays, beauty isn't only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirits but also in hearts and how we conduct ourselves. Never permit someone to tell you you are not valuable," Meza said in Spanish.
Meza lamented that an immediate lockdown should have taken place at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic when asked by Miss Universe 1997 Brook Lee how she would have handled the situation if she was the leader of her country.

"I believe there's not a perfect way to handle this hard situation such as Covid-19. However, I believe that what I would've done was create the lockdown even before everything was that big [the Covid-19 situation] because we lost so many lives and we cannot afford that. We have to take care of our people. That's why I would've taken care of them since the beginning," Meza said.
