THE Provincial Government of Guimaras has canceled some Manggahan Festival events that were scheduled on May 20 to 22 due to the increasing number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in the province.

Governor Samuel Gumarin signed Executive Order 19 series of 2021 on May 17, prohibiting the conduct of the following Manggahan Festival events:

* Manggahan Ride (Bike and motorcycle)

* Manggahan Sports Fest

* Agri-Trade Fair

* Press conference

* Manggahan by the Beach

Gumarin said the Provincial Government will prioritize the safety of the Guimarasnons over these activities, noting that the Covid-19 pandemic remains to be a public health emergency in the country and around the world, “killing more than three million people to date since 2020.”

He also cited the Western Visayas Regional Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases’ public advisory issued on May 7, 2021 that discouraged the conduct of activities that entail mass gathering and participation of residents from other local government units.

In his EO, Gumarin said the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Provincial Health Office recorded on Sunday, May 16, 24 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total confirmed infections in the province to 466.

Of the 466 cases, 49 are considered active, 409 have recovered from the disease and eight have died.

Gumarin said non-essential travels for both residents and non-residents to and from Guimaras are also discouraged, while mass gatherings and contact sports are strictly prohibited. (LMY/With Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
