SOME 600 youth beneficiaries from the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Tacloban City, Palo, and Alangalang in Leyte have availed themselves of the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers or Tupad program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Eastern Visayas.

“The DOLE never stops working in order to help our workers, including our youths, especially during this pandemic,” said labor Assistant Secretary Victor Del Rosario during the payouts to the Tupad workers on Monday, May 17, 2021.

Each beneficiary received P3,250 as payment for their services rendered during the 10-day implementation of the Tupad program.

They were also provided with personal protective equipment and micro insurances.

The total Tupad assistance extended amounted to P2,193,600, according to the labor office in the region.

Aside from their Tupad wages, the youth beneficiaries also received P2,000 each as financial aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program.

In his message, Del Rosario urged the youth beneficiaries “to use their hard-earned money for the basic needs.”

“I would like to remind our beneficiaries to spend the money for basic needs and not on alcoholic drinks or gambling. Please bear in mind that these are government’s funds,” he said.

Del Rosario also reminded the youths to be hopeful amid the pandemic.

Norman Uyvico, head of DOLE-North Leyte Field Office, represented Regional Director Henry John Jalbuena during the Tupad payouts at the Tacloban City Engineer's Office, Montejo Gymnasium in Palo, and Alangalang Covered Court.

Also in attendance during the series of payouts were Director Alan Tanuakio and Jane Anne Lo from the Office of the President, who brought raffle items for the beneficiaries such as bicycle, rubber shoes, and electronic gadget; Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez and Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin; Alangalang Mayor Lovell Ann Yu; and SK Federation presidents Thomas John Diaz, Jan Reian Saavedra, and Oriell Chiquillo, who also represented Palo Mayor Frances Ann Petilla.

Meanwhile, the Technical Education Skills Development Authority and the Department of Trade and Industry provided updates of their training programs and services and gave free business advice and consultations to the youth beneficiaries during the event. (SunStar Philippines)
