SIX hog raisers associations in Negros Occidental have been organized by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) through its Provincial Veterinary District Field Units in Second, Third and Fourth Districts.

These are Secaba Cadiz Viejo Burgis Hog Raiser Association (Secabuhora) in Cadiz City; Manapla Hog Grower Association (Mahoga) in Manapla; San Enrique Hog Raisers Association in San Enrique; La Granja Hog Raisers Association in La Carlota City; Barangay Salvacion Farmers and Hog Raisers Association in Murcia; and Cabahug Swine Raisers Association (Cabasra) in Cadiz City.

Members of the newly organized hog raisers associations took their oath and elected their officers recently.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the association members are mostly former and existing laborers as well as housewives who have been engaged in hog raising for a long time already.

Decena said they were organized mainly to attain a common objective of being government partners in strengthening the efforts on the prevention of African Swine Fever (ASF) from entering the province's borders.

"The member-raisers will also help in providing sufficient supply of pork not only for Negros Occidental but also to other provinces affected by the dreaded swine disease," he added.

The newly-organized hog raisers associations are currently up for becoming a member of the Alliance of Hog Raisers Association of Negros Occidental.

This is in consonance with the mandate of the provincial veterinarian to increase the membership of the alliance.

He believed that more memberships would mean sufficient manpower to safeguard the borders against the growing online selling of pork products perceived to be one of the main causes of ASF spread.

"Also, being organized means easy access to government support through various swine programs and projects of the province," Decena said.

It can be noted that backyard swine raisers are making big contributions to the local hog supply similar to that in neighboring provinces and in Luzon.

This is the result of improved production performance attributed to the continuous effort of the provincial government in upgrading the capability of backyard raisers by providing them with genetically superior breed of swine.

"True to its mandate, the PVO help capacitates animal raisers in the province through organizing them," he said, adding that district field unit personnel strategically stationed in all six districts continue to give them technical support.
